Number Rods at Home: Printables That Match the Material
By The YHO Team · October 27, 2026 · 1 min read
You do not need a metre-long wooden set to give a child the number rods idea. Paper can carry the same sequence.
Table of contents
The number rods are one of the older Montessori materials, and one of the clearest. Each rod grows by exactly one unit. A child can see quantity, hold it, and count it. Paper versions keep that logic intact.
Lay them out in order first
Before counting, build the staircase. Shortest to longest, edges lined up. Say nothing except the names as you go. The child is learning that ten is not just a bigger word than three, it is a longer thing.
Count the sections, not the printout
Once the staircase stands, count a rod section by section, touching each one. Three touches, three sections, three. Then find the numeral card that matches and place it beside the rod. This is the moment number symbols stop being decoration.

Cover part of a rod and ask what is under your hand. Take a longer rod and ask how many sections it has. Let the child check by counting. Rod work rewards patience and repetition, and it does not need to be timed or scored.
Keep the set together
Print the rods on card stock, cut them, and store them in a long envelope or a shallow box. If pieces roam, the material stops being a material. A quick laminate means the set survives being counted a hundred times.
Number rods are a starting point, not a test. Ten minutes of building a staircase and naming lengths is a full lesson at four.
