Practical Life Indoors: Winter Jobs for Small Hands
By The YHO Team · November 1, 2026 · 1 min read
When the garden is frozen, practical life moves inside: pouring, wiping, folding, sorting. Real work, small scale.
Table of contents
Practical life is the part of Montessori that translates most easily into a small apartment in February. No garden, no mud kitchen, no problem. The work just moves to the kitchen table.
Six indoor jobs that hold
- Pouring dried beans from jug to jug.
- Wiping the table with a damp cloth, then drying it.
- Folding small cloths into squares.
- Sorting laundry by owner or colour.
- Setting the table with a placemat guide.
- Peeling a clementine and putting the peel in the bin.
Each one is real work. None of them need a worksheet.
Set up for independence
Keep the cloth, the small jug and the tray where the child can reach them. A job that requires an adult to fetch the equipment is not a job, it is an activity with a supervisor.

View printableExpect the mess, plan for it
Water gets spilled. Beans escape. Build a tray that contains most of the mess, keep a cloth nearby, and treat the spill as the second half of the job rather than a failure. The child who wipes up is the child who learns the whole cycle.
Add a printable sequence card
Three or four pictures showing the steps lets a child set up and check their own work without asking. That card is the difference between doing an activity and running a small operation.
Winter is long. Give the child the jobs and the season gets shorter.
