Montessori for a Two-Year-Old: Start Here

By Hellen Gomez, founder of Montessori Kids•August 26, 2026

Two is a good age to start. Your child is walking, grabbing, and saying words, and they want to do everything themselves. Montessori at two is mostly about getting out of the way.

Set up a few things at their height. A low shelf with three activities. A stool so they can reach the sink. A small pitcher of water they can pour. Many parents find that a two-year-old who can reach their own cup asks for help less and spills less over time.

Keep activities short. Two-year-olds focus in bursts. An activity that holds them for five minutes is a success. Don't expect twenty.

Offer real tools, not toys that do things for them. A small broom they can actually push. A sponge for wiping. A basket of objects to move from one bowl to another. The work is the moving.

Say yes more than you say no, by changing the room. If something is off-limits, put it away. If something is available, make sure they can reach it. A room full of yes is easier than a room full of no.

When they say 'me do it,' let them, even if it takes three times longer. That's the whole method at this age.
