Shelf Rotation Without Losing Your Weekend
Rotate less than you think
Most shelves are over-rotated. A material that has been out for three weeks is only a problem if nobody is choosing it. Check the choosing, not the calendar.
The twenty-minute routine
Friday afternoon, walk the shelf with a notepad. Mark each material chosen, ignored, or finished. Then do three things only: remove the finished ones, re-present one ignored material, add one new thing.
Re-present before you replace
An ignored material is usually a presentation problem. Give the lesson again, slowly, to the one or two children who might take it. That often does more than a new tray.
Keep a rotation box
Materials that come off the shelf go into a labelled box, not a cupboard. When the box is full, the shelf has a source. When it is empty, you buy nothing.
Let children help
Pack-away is part of the work. Children who tidy the shelf know where things live and treat the room as theirs. It also saves you ten minutes at the end of the day.
Guard the weekend
If a rotation takes more than half an hour, the system is too complicated. Simple systems get done in February.

How Long Should an Activity Last?
Ages and timers are the wrong measure. Four signals tell you when a child is finished, and none of them is a clock.
