When the iPad Is the Calmest Room in the House

By Hellen Gomez, founder of Montessori Kids•October 23, 2026

Some evenings the tablet is the calmest room in the house. No shoes on the couch, no shouting about the wrong cup, just a small person breathing slowly with a hedgehog on the screen. You feel two things at once: relief, and a small stab of something that sounds like failure.

It is not failure. It is information.

A quiet screen is often a tired child

A child who melts down at the table but settles instantly on the iPad is not choosing screens over you. They are choosing the thing that asks nothing of them. After a day of being told where to sit, what to eat, and how to hold a pencil, a screen that requires nothing is genuinely restful.

What to do with that

Name it out loud, to yourself if not to them: my child is depleted, not defiant. Then decide what the tablet is for tonight. Ten minutes of quiet so dinner can happen is a legitimate use. Three hours because nobody had the energy to intervene is also a real thing that happens in real houses.

The one thing worth changing

Put something between the screen and bedtime. A bath, a story, a stretch on the floor. Not because screens are poison, but because the handoff is where the calm either carries over or collapses.

Guilt is not a parenting tool

You are allowed to use the tool that works on a Tuesday in November. The goal is not a zero-screen house. The goal is a child who can also be calm without one, which is built on other days, not this one.

Tomorrow, try the table before the tablet. Tonight, take the quiet.
