Coloring Pages for the Child Who Says "I'm Bad at Coloring"

Reluctant colourers usually have a real reason. Fix the page and the pens, and the colouring comes back.
Table of contents
A child who says they are bad at colouring has usually tried a page that was too detailed for their hand, with pens that did not work, while someone told them to slow down. The fix is almost always the materials, not the child.
Pick a page they can finish
Large shapes, thick outlines, empty space. Detailed pattern pages are lovely and they are for a later stage. If a page cannot be finished in ten minutes, it is the wrong page.
Fix the tools
Short, chunky crayons or felt tips that actually leave colour. Broken crayons and dried markers make a child feel clumsy, and they are right: the tool is the problem.
Colour beside them, not at them

View printableSit down with your own page. Say nothing evaluative. 'Nice colours' is fine once; a running commentary teaches a child to colour for an audience instead of for themselves.
Praise the effort you actually saw
Not 'beautiful'. Rather: 'you filled the whole leaf' or 'you stayed with it'. Specific, observable, and repeatable tomorrow.
Leave the page out
A colouring page that stays on the table gets returned to. One that is tidied away at the end of the session is finished forever. Let it sit.
Colouring is practice, not performance. Once the pressure comes off, most reluctant colourers come back on their own.
